2010 Scholarship Recipients

Dante Gutter

Dante Gutter

High School: Bradley Tech and Trade High School - Milwaukee, WI
Post-Secondary Plans: Wisconsin Lutheran College (Freshman); Secondary Education with focus on Urban Education
Field of Study: I chose teaching because as a student I learned how powerful education can be. Several teachers made a positive difference in my life and I would like to do the same. I have also found that there is a shortage of minority males in the field of education and I would like to help change that.
Inspirations: I had three teachers who were particularly inspirational to me. Their teaching styles were different but they all had two things in common. They were passionate about the subjects they taught and they cared about the success of each of their students. They sparked my interest in becoming a teacher.
Message to WEASSP: : I am very grateful to WEASSP for this scholarship and their support of my education. It will help me to continue on my path to becoming a teacher and positive role model in an urban high school.

Susan Higgins

Susan Higgins

High School: Riverside University High School - Milwaukee, WI
Post-secondary Plans: University of Wisconsin-Madison (Freshman); International Studies/Pre-Law
Field of Study: I chose my field of study upon traveling to Hungary with AFS. I really connected with people of different cultures and I knew I wanted to pursue a career in the realm of international politics or have a solid foundation in current international issues. My inspiration for Pre-Law came from volunteering in social justice organizations, specifically in immigrant rights with the organization Voces de la Frontera
Inspirations: My biggest motivator was working with undocumented immigrant youth who often do not have the funds to continue their education. For me to continue my education is an honor and a privilege -- that most people in the world do not have -- and I must absorb knowledge and use my education to help others.
Message to WEASSP: Thank you for making it easier to continue my education. I cannot fully express my gratitude. Thank you!

Karisa Hutcherson

Karisa HutchersonHigh School: Washington Park High School - Racine, WI
Post-Secondary Plans: University of Wisconsin-Madison, Pre-Pharmacy
Field of Study: I wanted to be in the health field and work with patients but did not want to work on them, so I thought this was a perfect way to pursue my dreams. I am outgoing, love working with people, and am interested in chemistry and pharmacy. I plan to achieve my BS in Pharmacology and Toxicology and want to get my Masters degree and PhD in the long run. I am thinking about clinical or a pharmaceutical company.
Inspirations: The experience that inspired me was actually growing up. I look at how much my parents struggled and how hard they worked, and still do. I want to be able to give them everything they worked so hard to give me, and in the end I realize that’s happiness. I know they want me to succeed and that’s what pushes me
Message to WEASSP: I would like to deeply thank WEASSP for this scholarship. This helps so much in achieving my goals.

Tenzin Khedup

Tenzin KhedupHigh School: Madison East High School - Madison, WI
Post-Secondary Plans: University of Wisconsin-Madison (Freshman); Computer Science (and maybe Business)
Field of Study: Growing up in India, I was never fully exposed to computers until I arrived in the US. As long as I can remember, I was always breaking apart and repairing electronics. Computer, to me, was the ultimate technology and why I plan to pursue a computer science career. My goal is to work on the global stage.
Inspirations: The struggles and hardships my parents faced to bring my brother and me to the US is what has driven and inspired me. Their sacrifice opened the door for me to achieve what is possible. My distant goal is to return to my old school in India and help them improve and get connected to the global network.
Message to WEASSP: It gives me great joy knowing there are people with such great generosity. I will not forget this gift and hope someday I can pass this generosity to another future prominent student. Thank you.
